Chart editor-in-chief Brennan Stebbins won first place in breaking news reporting and editorial writing at the annual Society of Professional Journalists Region 7 Spring Conference held April 9 in Overland Park, Kan.
Stebbins won in the breaking news category for his coverage of Missouri Southern’s hiring of a convicted embezzler to teach accounting. The editorial writing win was for a series of three Chart editorials.
“It’s nice to be personally recognized, but this is just evidence of the good journalism that is being practiced at Missouri Southern,” Stebbins said. “The Chart has historically done well in the Mark of Excellence Awards, and I am sure that will continue.”
Stebbins, along with the other regional winners, will advance to national judging. Those winners will be announced in early May and presented at the SPJ’s national conference Sept. 25-26 in New Orleans. Stebbins was a national finalist in editorial writing last year.
“The national competition will be tough,” Stebbins said. “It is gratifying just to be recognized.
“Last year’s award was a pretty big surprise.”
Stebbins bested students from Iowa State University and Kansas State University.
The SPJ’s Region 7 consists of colleges and universities in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.

So they fire The Chart advisor.
Smart. Very smart.
Congratulations to Brennan and to the Chart. You are doing well upholding a standard of excellence for your work and of that to come.
"The Chart has historically done well in the Mark of Excellence Awards, and I am sure that will continue."
Sounds arrogant and overconfident, typical Southern journalism product, cut from the same cloth as Rick Rogers. Perhaps his heir apparent.
Anxious to see just where this prodigy plans to pen. His ego could use an adjustment. Talented? Yes. Does he know it? Like Rogers, abundantly.
Well, Anon 10:06
That is nice. First of all, Brennan's statements acknowledged the paper and not himself.
Very humble, if you ask me.
Second, Rick and Brennan earned the state's highest individual honor for journalism. Both were outstanding examples of how to practice the profession.
And the typical Southern journalism product does well, gets a job and (more often than not) kicks butt.
I would put Jessica MacIntosh, Rebecca Watts-Haines, Amye Buckley, Alexandra Nicolas and Brennan Stebbins up against your team.
And I would not hesitate to staff a paper with that group alone any day any time.
Do they have egos? Yes. Should they, yes.
They are good.
