Kanakuk, Joe White cannot agree with family of sex abuse victim on lawsuit trial date

A status report filed today in U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas indicates attorneys for Branson-based Kanakuk and its CEO Joe White cannot agree with plaintiffs' attorneys on a date for the trial of a lawsuit brought by the family of one of former Camp Director Pete Newman's underage sex abuse victims.

Attorneys for the sex abuse victim said they wanted a trial date between June 1 and Aug. 11, 2013, to enable the boy, to finish his junior year in high school and have time to rest before his senior year.

Kanakuk officials say that time frame is not good for them, since they have to train camp counselors and run the camp between May 18 and Aug. 31.

They did concede that an Aug. 5 trial date would be possible, giving the boy a one-week break before his senior year if the trial lasts the predicted two weeks.

The particulars of the lawsuit can be found at this link.

Everything about this is sad.

There are enough delays in our justice system without having to worry about a lawyers vacation. These things are set usually months in advance so no excuse for a vacation and you can't tell me there is not more than one attorney in this case on each side. These are pitiful excuses and should not be tolerated by the court.
