New felony sex charge filed against former Webb City teacher

A second felony charge involving an alleged sex act with a student was filed in Jasper County Circuit Court today against former Webb City Junior High school math teacher/coach.

Popejoy was arrested on a statutory sodomy charge November 22 for allegedly touching a boy's testicles under his clothing November 15 at the school.

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney charged Popejoy with felony sexual contact with a student for the same act.

According to the amended information, the victim was under 14 years old.

Popejoy waived the reading of the information on the new charge and waived his preliminary hearing. Judge Jerry Holcomb bound him over for trial with the arraignment set for 1 p.m. February 24 in Division I.

Popejoy was in his sixth year teaching in the Webb City R-7 School District. He was placed on leave and subsequently resigned.
