Ben Baker on stay-at-home order: Gov. Parson, remove these shackles and set us free

After consulting with scientists, medical professionals and economists, Rep. Ben Baker, R-Neosho, weighed his options carefully.

He pored over articles from medical and scientific journals doing his best to determine just how a virus like COVID-19 spreads through a community.

Just as in every important decision Ben Baker has made since his election to the House of Representatives, he talked to numerous citizens, even those who disagreed with him.

Sure, they can be a hassle sometimes, but when it comes time to exercise his responsibility as a legislator, Baker wanted to make absolutely sure he was representing everyone and weighing their opinions carefully.

Oh, who am I kidding?

Ben Baker walked out on the street looked in all directions, couldn't see any virus and decided to write the governor.

Baker makes no bones about it. He wants the stay-at-home order lifted and so does every one of his constituents. At least that's what his letter indicates. He writes that some of the businesses in his district are remaining closed, not because they have to, but due to "societal pressures."

It is unclear how there can be "societal pressures" if all of Baker's constituents want the businesses open.

Baker shared his letter on Facebook earlier this evening.

Governor Parson,

I want to begin by saying that I have been impressed and very thankful for your measured leadership during this time of crisis.

It is easy to see that you love our state and truly care about the well-being of the citizens of Missouri. I can't imagine the pressure of your position and the stress of making extremely difficult decisions in an unprecedented time like this.

In the last month I have probably had more constituent communication than all of my tenure as a representative combined. This is why I am writing to you today.

I am doing what I was elected to do and that is to be a voice for the people I serve. Many have asked me to forward their sentiments to your office and that is what this letter is about.

We are seeing now that much of the initial projections of the curve for COVID-19 were very wrong. Most understand the need to "flatten the curve" to offset the spread of the virus and lessen the impact upon our hospitals.

Even before a stay-at-home order was implemented in Missouri, most responsible people were taking heed and staying home. Most were willing to do whatever it took to save lives and mitigate the spread.

Now we have clear data to make better decisions rather than just speculation. We are also faced with other data regarding our economy. Unemployment in the state of Missouri is processing hundreds of thousands of applications a week. Many businesses in my district have shut their doors never to reopen. People who have never filed unemployment in their entire life are now navigating the system for help. So many are seeing their lives work crumble before their eyes due the economic shutdown.

Business is being crushed under our current restrictions and many are closed simply out of societal pressure rather than the clear data.

My constituents have made it very clear to me that we need to re-open our state. At the very least, we need to open up areas that have not been hard hit. Our area has relatively very small numbers of COVID-19 cases and the shutdown is unwarranted in these areas.

Our hospitals are laying off workers because they have nothing to do. People with other health conditions are not being treated who need to be treated.

The mental health of the elderly in nursing home facilities is deteriorating because they don't get to visit with family members. There are too many unintended consequences of these restrictions to keep them much longer.

We need bold leadership right now that weighs all the data and will begin the discussion of putting Missouri back to work as quickly as possible.

I don't envy your position at all and I know that you are working hard to do what is best. You and Mrs. Parson are in our prayers daily, understanding that you need encouragement and strength to lead strong.

I just wanted you to be aware of the concerns of the 160th District and we ask for your thoughtful consideration to allow us to open up areas of our economy again soon.

How would a suicide cult look much different?!

But Heck yeah! Let's get them Waffle Houses and Chik-Fil-As open so the populace can return to getting fat and clogging their arteries!

I suppose the gawd hustlers and churches are probably missing all their poor parishioner's offerings and tithing- to the point where they may need a bailout of their own.

Meantime someone always thinks he has the prescription for what ails the nation.

Bonus points for the slavery reference am I right?

What would we do without Ben Baker? I really don't know, but I am more than willing to try.

Don't know what Turner consulted but what comes out of either end of Turner looks and smells the same. Turner is so looking forward to writing more books about what Turner did to extenuate the Panic over a disease which is currently killing less than a third of a percent of the population and better than half the population doesn't even know when they get it. Turner is the very sort of loser on the outs with the local population that it has to isolate itself and so at the end of its miserable life has nothing better to do than to counsel policies leading to further misery and death.

The course which should have been followed was to close the schools and businesses for a week to give those most at risk time to make arrangements to quarantine and then take the lumps from this man-made plague. Like Sweden or Iowa simply ask those at risk to quarantine themselves and to help less than the one percent most at risk who want that help. Instead the very most disruptive course of both action and inaction was chosen as it allowed every single witless politician over a degenerate population to seize power and destroy the economy.

Ben Baker is a Christian Man who has seen what the case is in his district and wants this district to be the first to rebound. Thus his letter talking sense as opposed to listening to the very idiots who brought this about by offshoring to China and financializing the entire economy which now has crashed.

Turner hates Christianianity and Christian values so of course Turner has been fired for cause and now has nothing but a blog wherein it drips its poison and allows only Turner-types to comment.

The current condition is unsustainable and will lead to collapse where it is enforced. Ben Baker is simply asking for the economy to be reopened so that healthy rural areas can get back to business in what will become the new normal.

Jeebus!

10:50 person has the brains of a crash test dummy!

Between their buybull nonsense and their profound scientific ignorance there's not much there.

It's almost deplorable.

people like 10:50 am are why we had people like Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin in politics.

Also why we have Donald Trump as president.

Stupid has consequences!
