Silver Dollar City lays off 257 workers

Silver Dollar City will lay off 257 workers Monday, according to a WARN Act notice filed Tuesday with the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development.

The rationale for the layoffs was detailed in the filing:

As a result of the unforeseeable coronavirus natural disaster, which has resulted in closing our doors to the public, pursuant to the WARN Act we are writing to inform you that there will be a mass furlough at Silver Dollar City Theme Park, Silver Dollar City Campground, the Showboat Branson Belle, and White Water with the primary address being 399 Silver Dollar City Parkway, Branson, Missouri 65616, on April 20, 2020.

We were unable to provide more notice of this action because these circumstances were not reasonably foreseeable until recently when the full impact of COVID-19 on our business became clear.

We are providing as much notice as is practicable under the circumstances and given the rapid pace at which this situation has developed.

This mass furlough is expected to be temporary, but the duration is unknown. The expected date of the first separation will be April 20, 2020.

All affected employees have been notified of their furlough dates and that their furloughs from employment are expected to be temporary. Those employees are expected to be furloughed from employment on April 20, 2020. The number of furloughed employees at this facility is 257.

There are no bumping rights for affected employees – that is, employees will not be able to displace more junior employees out of their job positions as a result of the mass furlough.

Former bat guano mine turned into a modern day hillbilly heaven tourist trap closes during a pandemic thought to be associated with bats.

You could make a joke about symmetry or irony but the fans probably wouldn't cotton onto it.
