Kansas Governor: We need our hospitals focused on saving lives, not on keeping the lights on

During her briefing today, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly detailed steps she is taking to get money to Kansas hospitals, which have taken a financial beating since the advent of the COVID-19 crisis.

As hospital officials prepared for a surge of coronavirus cases, Kelly said, they curbed ele. ctive procedures, opened beds and stocked up on protective equipment.

"They forfeited a substantial portion of their revenue," Kelly said.

"Now they are struggling to make payroll."

Kelly said $17 million from a grant program is being directed to the hospitals to help them make ends meet and a request for additional funding will be submitted Thursday.

"Our hospitals are the front line of the pandemic. We cannot stand by and do nothing.

The governor provided an update of COVID-19 statistics, noting that seven more deaths had occurred within the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 76. Sixty-eight more people have been confirmed to have the virus, increasing the state's total to 1,494. Cases have been confirmed in 63 of Kansas' 105 counties.

Kelly also announced the state's stay-at-home order has been extended through May 3 and provided an update on efforts that are being made to make sure everyone can timely file for unemployment.

Prior to COVID-19, the Kansas Department of Labor was receiving an average 600 claims a day. The total is now at approximately 14,000.
