Did anyone actually believe him?
Extensive reporting had already been done with multiple sources confirming that the idea was the president's the president's alone.
But even if you don't believe anything written or broadcasted by professionals whose job it is to gather information, confirm it, then keep the public informed on what their elected leaders are doing, you should still be bothered by the concept of President Trump's name going on the checks, even if it just on the memo line.
Consider the rationale Mnuchin used for his "decision."
“That was my idea. He is the president and I think it’s a terrific symbol to the American public,” he said on “State of the Union.”No, Mr. Mnuchin, it was not a terrific symbol to the American public.
It gives the misleading message that the president, and the president alone, is responsible for those checks.
While it is true, none of this would be happening if he had not signed the stimulus bill, without more than 500 members of Congress, not just Democrats, but most members of the president's party passed the bill.
Without the bill, there is nothing for the president to sign.
Why not put the signatures of every Congressman from Nancy Pelosi to Billy Long somewhere on that check?
Wouldn't the thought that Democrats and Republicans in Congress working with the president were able to get this done to help the American people send us a much more reassuring message than the one being sent by Mnuchin- that we owe everything we received to the president?
That would be more fitting, but it would be also ridiculous and would further delay the money get to people who need it.
A much better solution would be to go back to the way this has always been done- the check should have been signed by a government bureaucrat whose name we do not know and whose name we will not remember.
The president works with Congress to make sure the money is available to the people, but the responsibility of seeing to it that the job gets done goes to nameless, faceless bureaucrats who always make sure the job gets done, sometimes imperfectly, but to the best of their ability.
Of course, the idea that government workers play a critical role in keeping this country functioning is not the message that Mnuchin or the president wants delivered.
And the idea that these people, who have been slandered as being part of the "Deep State" actually are working for our benefit, would certainly not fit in with the message that has been shoved down our throats for the past few years.
A bureaucrat's signature would have been the perfect positive message to send to the American people.
You could even let the president say it was his idea.

Trumps' name on a check, I feel just like a porn star!
Why not put presidunce tRUMP's name and likeness on a dollar bill? There is a toilet paper shortage.
Here's a win win idea-
Orange Man Bad. Bad Bad Bad Orange Man.
Alzheimer-American Senile Joe Biden good. We need a puppet with dementia in the White House.
Orange Man Bad. Bad Bad Bad Orange Man.
Well,if it's so offensive to you, give it back!
You don't have to accept it. I'm sure everyone who hates the president will return it. Thank you President Trump and thanks to our House and Senate.
Man, once you guys get a talking point, you do nothing but parrot it over and over. Everyone who hates it can return it may make you feel good when you say it, but it really doesn't make much sense and has nothing to do with the truth of the matter. You may not like it that Congress is just as responsible for the check as the president, but that doesn't make it any less true. If it makes him feel better to put his name on a check, I doubt seriously that anyone would be stupid enough to return money that Congress approved for them. But if it makes you feel better to continue to use talking point phrases that exhibit a philosophy that would fit on a postage stamp, please feel free to do so.
I am thankful for the check. It will help pay my bills and buy groceries. Instead of finding fault or complaining, be thankful. Other countries are digging mass graves and dumping citizens in them-also no stimulus checks in those countries.
Be thankful for what you have.
Sure thing Randy. So the first three comments appeal to your need for philosophical depth? Or is it you just get riled with logical, straight to the point common sense. Sorry my comments don't include vapid, absurd hashtags or "dRumph"/ OrAnGe MaN bAd or some other 3rd grade level newspeak. Keep churning out the bias and the emotion driven drivel, I find it entertaining. Damn D-slaves.
Republicans: "If you accept the check that means he's your president"
Democrats: "If you accept the check that means you're socialist"
Normal people: "Oh good I can buy food now"
