Joplin man charged with DWI, driving into house, assault involving hatchet and gun


A Joplin man was arraigned this morning in Jasper County Circuit Court on charges of felony driving while intoxicated (persistent offender), assault, property damage (two counts) and aggravated fleeing a stop or detention.

The charges against Stephen Ray Box (DOB 1967) stem from a domestic dispute investigated by the Joplin Police Department February 15, according to the probable cause statement.

Stephen Box went to the residence of V1. Box threw a hatchet at her and discharged a firearm toward her residence, striking her vehicle through the passenger side window and driver side door causing $3,500 in damages.







Once officers arrived on scene, Box fled in a white Ford F150 with officers in pursuit in marked police vehicles, utilizing their emergency lights and sirens.

Box crashed the vehicle into a residence in Joplin damaging the property of V2 in an amount that exceeds $750.

Box exited the vehicle. He refused to follow commands and was taken into custody after a use of force. Box was unable to maintain {his} balance and his movements were erratic and jerky during the entire incident. He appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and/or alcohol. Box was unable to perform SFSTs and refused all chemical tests.







According to the complaint, Box has two previous DWI convictions, in 2021 and 2022, both in Jasper County.

Box is being held in the Jasper County Jail on a bond of $200,000 cash or surety or $10,000 cash only. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. March 5.
