Missouri Southern State University offensive line coach Derek Moore was shot to death Friday night outside of the Northstar 14 theater in Joplin.

MSSU has canceled Homecoming activities and postponed today's football game.

The following news release was issued by the Joplin Police Department.

On November 1, 2013 at approximately 9:50PM, officers with the Joplin Police Department responded to the Northstar 14 Movie Theatres for reports of shots fired. An officer with the Duquesne Police Department arrived on scene at approximately 9:51PM and the suspect was taken into custody at 9:52PM.

The victim was transported by EMS to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. It is believed at this time that this was not a random act. As of this time, we have not been made aware of any other injuries that were a result of the shooting.

The suspect has been identified as Jeffery L. Bruner a 39 year old male of Joplin. He is currently in custody in the Joplin City Jail for murder. Paperwork will be forwarded to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal charges.

We do not need to rethink gun laws. We need to have morals that are strong. For instance, wrong is always wrong even if you want it to be right. And maybe people should be thinking about the fact that someone nearby could be armed and maybe they'll shoot back.
