Legislators interviewed by veteran Columbia Tribune reporter Rudi Keller had no problem with Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro providing help to those helping retired billionaire Rex Sinquefield to place a measure eliminating teacher tenure on the ballot, but one criticized her tendency to keep things hidden from public view and to leave the legislature out of the process:
Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, questioned why Nicastro would bring the initiative up in a closed session and why the meeting with advocates was not disclosed earlier. "We have had substantial problems with Nicastro on openness and transparency in the legislature and respecting the legislature's role in the process," he said.
Considering that Schaefer stated his intention recently to make Common Core Standards a major issue during the 2014 legislative session, it appears Ms. Nicastro is going to be facing some problems.
