Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro says Common Core Standards are not handed down by the federal government.
"These are Missouri standards, not federal standards," Ms. Nicastro says in this interview with Mike Ferguson of Missouri Viewpoints.
Ms. Nicastro insisted that Common Core will not have any effect on local schools' ability to set their own curriculum. She made the same statement during a recent House interim committee hearing, but added that school districts that do not set curriculum designed for Common Core will not do well on the standardized tests.
Common Core Standards are supposed to be fully implemented in Missouri school districts by the 2014-2015 school year and that is well on its way to happening, Ms. Nicastro said, repeating the claim she made in a recent news release that 70 percent of Missouri teachers are already implementing the standards in their classrooms.
Ms. Nicastro also claims that Missouri played a key role in creating Common Core Standards. "We were very active in drafting Common Core Standards. We made sure they are aligned with Missouri Show-Me Standards.
