Bye, bye, Buddy? R-8 Board to vote this month on removing East Middle School principal

When the Joplin R-8 Board of Education meets a week from Tuesday, it will vote on either firing East Middle School Principal Bud Sexson or accepting his resignation.

The choice was offered to Sexson, who has been principal at East, following a closed-door 5-2 vote last month when the board decided whether to retain principals, sources close to the board told the Turner Report. Sexson reportedly initially indicated he would fight to keep his job, but has not found much support in the system.

The move followed a couple of years of steady complaints concerning Sexson's lax discipline, heavy-handed implementation of standards-based grading, and his brusque manner of dealing with parents, the sources said.

Sexson reportedly came to the Joplin school system after being encouraged to apply for the East Middle School post by former Assistant Superintendent Angie Besendorfer after Besendorfer forced veteran principal Ron Mitchell to resign following the 2009-2010 school year. Mitchell had been the principal at East during its first year, after serving seven years as South Middle School principal.

I pray this is not true. I LOVE him. I think he has been a great principal. My kids go to East and I can't imagine this could be the case.

I'm glad you LOVE him. However, the rest of us are not fans. If the Joplin Board of Education is so moved as to actually vote in some way other than 7-0, things must be pretty darned bad. I personally can't stand the arrogant jerk. He overlooks bullying, panders to the affluent parents, and has a reputation for harassing his female teachers. Maybe you all could go where he goes? Then everyone would be happy.

I called to let him know I was concerned about some things and he told me it was my problem and hung up on me. I wouldn't be upset if he left and he can take Mr. Weaver with him.

Good bye...dont let the door hit you on the way out!

I wonder if anyone will openly support him. If they try to stage a protest and put up posters, will he rip them down like he did Turner's? If protestors show up at the Board meeting, will Mr. Cravens threaten to have them arrested? It's probably a moot point. I can't imagine he has ever inspired anyone that much.

Another Angie leftover tossed out like yesterday's news. I wonder if the rest are getting nervous. We can only hope.

Thank goodness! What took so long?

So are you singing the boards praised now? The same board that got rid of you?

Certainly not. I am just reporting what is happening.

Karma is a hateful mistress sometimes, or is this reap what you sow? If he would only be escorted out by police and be made out to be a pedophile or a cheat. Then things would be approaching the normal way Joplin dispenses with a troublesome employee.

Can't wait for a new Board so we can see more of the regime removed and normalcy restored.

They need to get rid Of Jason Weaver. He is the big problem at East. My son went to East but because of Weaver I had to pull him out and switch him to another middle school across town. Weaver harassed my son incessantly, refused to give medical treatment when he broke his arm at school and flat out lied on referrals about things that happened. We ended up at the Juvenile office because of his lies and proved they were in fact lies. The entire time my son went to east I NEVER once saw Mr. Sexson. I couldn't even tell you what he looked like before this picture.I hope for all the kids who go to East they don't make Jason Weaver the principal. That jerk is on a major power trip and needs a dose of reality!!!!!!!!!!!!

i can think of about four more people who need to go....

That's what happens when you don't do your job like you are supposed to. Randy should know that , as many jobs as he has been fired from.

"when the board voted whether to retain principals?" What does that mean? And to the person who says he hung up on them when she/he called to complain that only makes sense if you were belligerent. And I love the comment that he caters to the affluent parents. How does he figure out who is affluent? How does he cater to them? I am poor but he has been nothing but extremely nice and friendly every time I see him.

12:38- I was not belligerent, my son was being physically attacked at school and he said that was my problem and hung up...kind sounds like the lack of discipline they are accusing him of. I also called C. J. Huff afterwards to make him aware with no luck and when I emailed him the email came back as undeliverable.

There are a couple of people over Special Ed that were hired by Bessendorfer that have no business being there, rumor has she hired one of her sorority sisters who has no Special Ed experience.

4:36 - I had the same problem. I sent an email regarding a complaint I had to Dr. Huff's secretary to be forwarded on to the Board members the day before they were having a Board meeting. The email came back as undeliverable. When I called her to let her know, she said they were having trouble with incoming emails being marked as spam. I then hand delivered the letter to be sure the Board members received it before the meeting - after the meeting one Board member I spoke with said he never received it. I guess the Board members aren't allowed to hear anything negative!

Do you realize that your premature "scoop" on firing of middle school principal may have actually saved his job?
Yes, you were unfairly fired and treated like a criminal by the school district, and your 1st amendment rights were violated, in my opinion. Who could blame you for wanting to inflict some pain? But your incessant dabbling in investigative reporting - divorce notices, DUIs, unnamed sources galore - is starting to resemble petty gossip. There's more than enough of that flying around Joplin on any given day without you leading the parade.
