McGrew, Flowers, Steele form committees; prepare for record amounts to be spent

The three Joplin School Board candidates endorsed by the Joplin Progress Committee have all formed campaign committees now, enabling them to accept the committee's money.

This should ensure that the same kind of spending the Joplin R-8 Board of Education has been indulging in for the past several years will be seen in a local board of education race for the first time in the district's history.

Both Board President Jeff Flowers and Shawn McGrew of Freeman Hospital, who has appeared in commercials for Bright Futures, formed their campaign committees today, according to Missouri Ethics Commission documents. The other incumbent in the race, Randy Steele, formed his committee earlier.

The documents indicate that one of those who has contributed to the Joplin Progress Committee, Nancy Good, is serving as McGrew's treasurer. Ms. Good is also on the Bright Futures advisory board.

I'm trying to remember a song from a while back that seems to fit this story. What was it...oh yes, it was "The Skeleton Song" by Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Does anyone have the lyrics that they might share here? I'd swear it fits this post.

According to the Bright Futures Jopin webpage, McGrew is serving on their advisory board. Since Bright Futures Jopin is financed by the district at 49%, isn't that a conflict of interest? Other interesting people on that board are also part of the Joplin Progress Committee. CJ's little enterprise is the pet of some of those PAC members, just as the opening day meeting was in th church of one of them. Another interesting member of that board is the questionably honorable Mike Woolsten. My, my, my. What a very complicated, as well as complicit, group.

I'll vote for none of them, no matter how much money the gang throws their way.

Speaking of conflict of interest, McGrew works for Freeman hospital: one of the main organizations behind Joplin Progress Committee. Coincidence? I think not. How else can Freeman work their strategy to secure the R8 health contract? I'd be curious to see what Freeman contributes to his campaign...
