New publisher for Joplin Daily

Former Joplin R-8 Board of Education member Rodney Blaukat is the new publisher of the Joplin Daily, according to an announcement posted on the news outlet's website. He replaces Chip Watson, who will devote his time to his duties as a regional manager for the newly-dubbed GateHouse Media, according to the article.

Chip won't be missed, because his impact on Joplin Daily was ZERO. Let him count beans somewhere else.

Rodney is a great choice to lead the paper. He is well liked in the community and has proven himself a leader in the community. Good luck Rodney.

Yes, Rodney is a great guy. But, how much actual journalism experience does he have?

It seems strange that a person with no journalistic experience is made a publisher. Sounds like someone hired an old school chum. That is the current trend in some local newspaper circles....

The company really should be ashamed to hire someone with no experience...just another good old boy...

A very non-professional move on someone's part. Hey, Randy Cope, are you listening.

Being well-liked and a leader in the community does not translate into success. The new Joplin paper faces an uphill struggle to survive. It needs someone who can think outside the box, not a good ole boy.

Well I forgot how we only have "journalists" on this blog who really don't know anything about actually having to run a paper or worry about revenue. I guess it just comes to your paychecks through the newspaper fairy. What the new paper needs is someone who can relate to the community and help generate advertising dollars. I think Hacker is there for the editorial content.

I think you will all be suprised by the move. I think Rodney will turn things around and make the venture a huge success by the year end.

I'll give you that Randy is an improvement over Chip. But, I don't think Randy is the person who can save the Daily. GateHouse at some point is going to pull the plug on this new enterprise, especially if advertising revenues continue to lag. While Randy can help promote the paper in the community, I don't see him offering much on the content side. Hacker is the editor, but he's not exactly on the cutting edge either.

Wow, the Daily Rat seems to be a little confused. First, I think his name is Rodney not Randy. Second, how much does Chiodo offer the Globe on the content side?

Chiodo doesn't offer anything on the content side. His role is to provide a healthy profit to CNHI, which he does quite well. The situation at the Daily is quite different. If they don't turn things around, GateHouse will plug the plug on this experiment. That's why the selection of a guy with no newspaper experience to run things is a bit strange.

The new publisher's biggest challenge, in my opinion, is getting John Q. Public excited about the paper. There may have been some initial excitement when the paper debuted, but it has since worn off. The public's response now is a collective yawn. The new publisher needs to come roaring out of the chute with some ideas.

Maybe you should take a closer look at Gatehouse Media. So far Fortress has invested over 1 billion dollars in them. I doubt they pull the plug any time soon...especially since the Globe has seen decreased revenues for the past few years under Mr. Chiodo's leadership.

Why does everyone have this assumption that the Daily is failing?

I don't claim to know much about newspapers, but I can tell that the Daily is cutting way back on the number of pages in the Sunday issue. The papers are pretty skimpy now. That has to be a sign that the Daily isn't doing very well.
