Hulshof, Steelman scheduled to appear at Lincoln Ladies Ice Cream Social

.
One of my favorite political events to attend has always been the Lincoln Ladies Republican Women's Club Ice Cream Social, held every two years just before the August primary.
Not only is the ice cream good, but I get a chance to see old friends, including the timekeeper for the event, Mary Lou Teel of the Jasper County Clerk's office, who worked for me for a short time as a reporter for the Lamar Democrat in the late '80s.
This year's social promises to be the political event of the year in Jasper County. According to written reports, the major GOP candidates for governor, Kenny Hulshof and Sarah Steelman, plan to attend, and other statewide candidates are likely to show.

This promises to be the most meaningful social, as far as statewide races are concerned, since 1992 when Bill Webster and Roy Blunt made their cases for governor.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, July 21, at Memorial Hall in Carthage.

I have been rather surprised not to see more recollections of that 1992 race for governor, a race that included not only Webster and Blunt, but State Treasurer Wendell Bailey, Lt. Gov. Mel Carnahan and St. Louis Mayor Vince Schoemehl.
For those wanting to relive that race, several chapters in my book, The Turner Report, are devoted to it, including two on the Lincoln Ladies Ice Cream Social. For more information, go to the book's web page on Amazon.com.
