Government responds to Jeff Smith's objection to pre-sentence report

With only five days left before sentencing, the government filed a memorandum today responding to the objections of former Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis to the pre-sentence investigation. As usual, the documents were sealed.

Smith pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to federal election conspiracy charges stemming from his unsuccessful 2006 primary election battle against Russ Carnahan for U. S. representative.

Smith, former Rep. Steve Brown, D-St. Louis, and campaign treasurer Nick Adams will be sentenced Nov. 17 in St. Louis.
