With the warm weather, many residents are getting outside and may notice smaller debris and trash items still remaining in their yards from the tornado destruction. The City of Joplin reminds citizens that if they need an extra set of hands, there are volunteers available to assist them.
“There are literally hundreds of students taking their spring breaks to come and help Joplin,” said Assistant City Manager Sam Anselm. “Residents who may need help raking the small debris out of their yards, or another set of hands in building a fence or other small projects, are encouraged to call for volunteer assistance. We are thankful for the many volunteers who have helped us in the past and those who are continuing with the recovery efforts by providing this type of help.”
Volunteer assistance is managed by AmeriCorps, an organization offering staff to match people with tasks requested by residents. Raking yards, painting, minor repairs, and small construction projects, such as building a ramp or fence, are just some of the jobs volunteers have helped with for Joplin residents.
More than 119,000 volunteers have worked thousands of hours to help Joplin thus far, and we continue to see people offering assistance.
