East Newton Board makes no decision on Common Core Standards

At the conclusion of what turned out to be a heated meeting, East Newton R-6 Board members took no action tonight on a resolution asking that the implementation of Common Core Standards be stopped.

Board President Mark Knight expressed the concern that if the board opted out of Common Core, East Newton's funding might be cut by the state and that students might not be taught the content that will be on the state tests, which will be based on those standards.

The board was told that two other school districts are considering dropping Common Core. The board will do more research before making a final decision.
