School board rejects senior trip to Hawaii

No Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts for the senior class at Bronaugh High School in Vernon County.

The Nevada Daily Mail is reporting the Bronaugh Board of Education rejected a proposal to take a senior trip to Hawaii.

Ninety percent of the district's graduating class will be going on the senior trip, according to the article. The other student is staying home.

From the article:

Susan Ricketts, a science teacher at Bronaugh and a sponsor for the seniors' trip came to the meeting because she said there had yet to be a final decision on where the students could go for their trip.

The class of 2016 gave Ricketts their top three destinations: Hawaii, Florida and lastly, Alabama. She needs to have the itinerary for the trip finished by the end of December.

Ricketts told the board they had $6,000 and there are seven high school basketball home games left where students can raise money and then middle school games. Because they make about $750 a game, she said she expects to make about $22,000 to spend on the trip.

After deliberating the topic, Saundra Bogart, the board secretary made the motion to keep the students in the continental United States. The motion passed 6-1 with board member Chris Baker voting "no."

"I just don't see why we need to restrict it," He said.

Maybe they didn't know Hawaii is still in the United States. People go there all the time. Maybe they think the Japanese will attack Pearl Harbor.

8:39 AM: Read the article, it reports there was plenty of detailed discussion about how Hawaii might not be a good idea.

"After deliberating the topic,"does not mean plenty of detailed discussion . Yes I read the article.

Then your reading comprehension leaves something to be desired. It included these details:

The faculty sponsor wasn't sure if travel outside the continental US was allowed, and after speaking with the Superintendent both decided to have the board decide.

"The board discussed the Hawaii's affordability, distance of each trip and how much money the class of 2016 raised."

Money expected to be raised and how many students were travelling was discussed in detail.

The issue of travel to there by a parent if there were problems was discussed; in general, besides the added expense of the travel, it might be obligating significantly greater difficulties and expenses in such a case, and the board president "also wondered if there had been rules put in place for in case of that type of incident occurring."

Those 9 sentences in 4 paragraphs count as reporting "plenty of detailed discussion" to me. When you say "After deliberating the topic" you're ignoring them and only mentioning the board's deliberations after that and before the vote.

I love fishing, and when I can make someone spend time chastising me, it's like hooking a big one.

I'm not chastising you, an anonymous voice on the net, but making sure your errors are not going unanswered for everyone else reading this comment thread.

That you say this:

I love fishing, and when I can make someone spend time chastising me, it's like hooking a big one.

Suggests you're just trolling the site, which is entirely unproductive.

Why not go to Branson?

I personally know some of the kids in this senior class, as well as some of the school board members and the principal. The kids and their sponsor at least went through the proper channels. The school board and administration were thorough in their discussion of the pros and cons. It was not a decision that was made lightly. I have a feeling that a senior trip is somewhat of a small school "perk" that is probably misunderstood by those living in the metropolis.
