Extra police at Carthage High School after shooter threat

Extra police officers are on hand at Carthage High School after a school shooting threat was circulated online this morning.

Carthage Police Department issued the following report about 20 minutes ago:
We are aware of the school shooter threat made this morning. We have multiple investigators working on the information. Additional officers are at the schools for extra security.

Word has spread quickly throughout the community and parents have been picking up their children from the high school.

Reportedly, the threat came from an anonymous source, was posted on Instagram and featured the high school bell schedule and someone called schlshooter2018 threatening to "shoot up CHS."

Carthage R-9 officials have not issued any statement at this point.

I am all for Severe & Swift penalties for people who even issue threats like this.

I am seeing on facebook where a couple of different schools throughout southern Missouri and northern Arkansas started receiving email threats on Sunday from multiple IP addresses. I'm wondering if it isn't all connected.

School and law enforcement must respond to every possible threat. With the advance of social media, anyone anywhere in the world with a little research ability and a computer or smart phone can create a threat to anyone or anywhere else in the world. This should be fully investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I have been in the training sessions to deal with threatened events such as this. Protocols are in place to proactively protect students and staff from even the possibility of this. The best offense is "If you see or hear something, say something."
