Joplin mayor proclaims Monday, June 15 Diversity Day

A proclamation declaring Monday, June 15 as a diversity day for the City of Joplin is on tap for the Joplin City Council when it meets 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Mayor Ryan Stanley's proclamation, which is being made at a time when protesters in Joplin and across the nation have been on the streets following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The diversity and inclusion proclamation includes but "is not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical and mental abilities or attributes, religious or ethical value systems, national origin and political opinions."

The value statement adds, "The City of Joplin acknowledges the dignity of all people and embraces an openness in differences and dialogue."

It concludes by noting, "We understand that Joplin's vitality depends on building a strong community where all belong" and adds, "Our City will not tolerate discrimination."
