The victim was a man in his 70s, according to a Health Department news release. The man was diagnosed June 10.
The release did not provide any other information about what part of the county he was from.
The news came only one day after county officials announced that the number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in the county had risen to 407, an increase of 109 cases in three days and 177 in six days.
Much of that increase has occurred in the Carthage area, according to Tuesday's news release.
The news comes on the same death that the McDonald County Health Department announced its first COVID-19 death. Newton County has had two deaths.
