Carthage R-9 officials cancel remainder of summer school session at Columbian Elementary

Less than a week after the Carthage R-9 School District announced the temporary cancellation of summer classes at Columbian Elementary after two students tested positive for COVID-19, district officials said this morning they are canceling the remainder of the session.

In a Facebook post, R-9 Superintendent Mark Baker explained the decision.

Unfortunately, Columbian Elementary summer school is cancelled for the rest of the session. Our student enrollment drastically decreased since we started summer school a few weeks ago. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this might cause.

The summer feeding program will continue daily from 10:00 – 11:30.

We had two students test positive at the junior high. The students and staff in those two rooms were placed in quarantine. There was no need to shut down the entire building as the rooms were cleaned multiple times since the infectious time the students were in summer school.

Please remember, we do not believe the transmission of COVID-19 is due to school contact, only community contacts
