Newton County jury finds Neosho businessman not guilty of child molestation charges

Following a three-day trial, a Newton County jury found Neosho businessman Mikell Cotton not guilty of child molestation and statutory sodomy charges.

Cotton, 57, owner of Neosho Collision Center, was arrested in 2021 following an investigation by the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

The probable cause statement alleged Cotton molested three girls, ages 9, 11 and 12 in 1997, 2003 and 2009. The statement noted Cotton denied the allegations.

Missouri law requires cases to be removed from case.net if charges are dismissed or if a person is found not guilty. While I understand the reasoning behind this, I wonder if sometimes both the person who was originally charged might be hurt by this. Many times there is coverage of the original arrest and filing of charges, but unless there is media in the courtroom when a trial or hearing is held, if the defendant is found not guilty or charges are dismissed, the public often never knows and all that is left is the original allegation. Understandably, you are never going to have a prosecuting attorney who is going to issue a news release when he loses a case, so we are often left in the dark.
