Sinquefield, Republican majority leader pour money into St. Louis Democrat's Senate campaign

Twenty-four hour reports filed by Rep. Rodney Hubbard, D-St. Louis, who is running for Senate in the Fifth District, indicate he received $14,850 Friday from 22 of the committees formed by retired billionaire Rex Sinquefield to help skirt campaign contribution limits.

Hubbard received maximum $675 contributions 18 My Job, My Wage committees, three Missourians Supporting Teaching Excellence committees, and one Public Charter Schools of Missouri committee.

Hubbard had already collected $36,450 in Sinquefield committee contributions, according to his April disclosure report, filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission, bringing the total, so far, to $51,300 during this calendar year.

But Sinquefield is not the only educational voucher supporter who is throwing support to the Hubbard campaign. Even the House Republican Majority Leader Steve Tilley is supporting the St. Louis Democrat. A 24-hour report filed Aug. 1 shows Friends of Tilley, the majority leader's campaign committee, made a $650 contribution.

In total, Hubbard picked up $18,050 in contributions Friday, according to the Ethics Commission reports.

In addition to Tilley, the leading national voucher supporting group, All Children Matter, which helped swing the 2004 governor's race by making $200,000 in direct expenditures, which helped fund the advertising blitz that enabled Matt Blunt to narrowly defeat Claire McCaskill, reported making $33,682 in direct expenditures to support Hubbard's candidacy.

Hubbard has easily outdistanced his opponent, Robin Wright-Jones in fundraising, collecting $291,278.54 as of the eight-day report. Ms. Wright-Jones had raised $62,400.52, according to the eight-day report.
