First highly-scripted night of convention comes to a close

Since most surprises have been taken out of modern day Democratic and Republican conventions in favor of tightly-scheduled, highly-scripted ceremonial activities, it is amazing that the conventions still provide so much entertainment.

The first night was highlighted by the dramatic reappearance of Ted Kennedy on the stage and excellent speeches by Michelle Obama and Claire McCaskill.

The evening is ending with Barack Obama addressing the convention from Kansas City, though he said St. Louis at one point.

"I'll see you guys on Thursday," Obama said, as one of his daughters said, "I love you, Daddy. Bye." Now that is the kind of unscripted moment that makes these spectacles worthwhile.
