Shades of Worrell: Perez shuts down Brewers for save

Rookie closer Chris Perez struck out sluggers Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder to preserve the St. Louis Cardinals' come-from-behind 5-3 win over wild card leading Milwaukee. The win moved St. Louis to within four-and-a-half games of the Brewers and preserved any chance they might have of returning to the playoffs for the first time since their world championship season of 2006.

The success Perez has had is reminiscent of 1985 when Whitey Herzog placed Todd Worrell in the closer role and moved Jeff Lahti, Ken Dayley, and Bill Campbell into setup roles.

The hitting star tonight was Ryan Ludwick, who hit his 32nd home run and knocked in three runs.
