"First of all we need someone who's going to be a good fund raiser. For the last 10 years the state has moved away from funding higher education and that means we have to be more pro-active in terms of external funding."
Last week, The Chart noted that the allegedly financially-troubled university is looking to hire a new administrator to raise funds. Now it is looking for a new athletic director who can raise funds. All of this time, I thought Bruce Speck was hired because of his fundraising abilities.
It appears Speck has found a surefire method to raise funds- hire other people to do it.

Privately, the people at the Missouri Southern Foundation will tell you that Speck hasn't raised any money except for his two concerts. But worse than that, he is alienating groups of potential donors. He and the Joplin Area Catholic Schools are embroiled in a nasty dispute over his last minute cancellation of a starring role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that has even reached the Board of Governors. Seriously, this guy is out there doing a lot more harm than good.
When Dr. Speck was interviewing for the MSSU job, he spoke repeatedly about all of his fundraising expertise. I guess it was just a bunch of hot air, which is something we now come to expect from him.
