Carthage High School having White Day on MLK Birthday- and it's not racist

Social media has been all over Carthage High School for letting everyone know that the MLK Holiday is a "white day" at the school.

It's not racist, folks- it is just an unfortunate coincidence.

The original calendar for the R-9 School District had Martin Luther King's birthday scheduled as a holiday, but weather cancellations forced district officials to schedule classes that day.

The high school uses block scheduling, a system where students attend half of their classes one day and the other half the next, enabling them to have longer classes.

Using the school colors to differentiate the days, half of the classes are held on blue days, the other half, including the ones scheduled for Monday are white days.

District officials issued the following news release:

A picture has been spreading on social media regarding our high school digital sign. Carthage High School uses block scheduling. Four classes are taught one day and another four classes are taught the next day. Our school colors are white and blue.
As a way to help everyone know which classes to attend, we call our schedule white days and blue days. Monday is our first snow makeup day.
Our high school staff wanted to remind the students to attend white day classes; thus, the purpose of posting white day on our sign.
In no way did we post this to disrespect or dishonor Martin Luther King Jr. We are very proud Carthage has one of the most diverse student demographics in our area. We would never intentionally disparage anyone. Hopefully, this message will be posted by those individuals who posted the picture.
