Joplin City Council to hear proposal for 8-screen theater with heated recliner seating, wine and cocktails

An update on a proposal from Woodsonia Real Estate to bring what is described as an "state of the art 8-screen B&B movie theater" to Joplin is on tap during the Joplin City Council's 6 p.m. Monday meeting.

Funding for the project would include $6 million in TIF funds, bonds for parking and green space improvements, as well as $1.3 million in city funds for those items.

Woodsonia's complete list of financial requirements from the city can be found at this link.

The theater would be located at 32nd Street at Hammons Boulevard.

A marketing study included in documentation for the City Council meeting described the amenities that will be available at the theater:

All auditoriums will feature wall-to-wall curved screens, 7.1 surround sound, reserved seating and electric leather heated recliners. The Marquee Bar and Grille will feature an expanded menu with a full kitchen, a bar and seating in the lounge area. The kitchen will also offer "fast serve" ordering from the concession stand where food and cocktails can be taken into any of the nine auditoriums.

The largest auditorium will be dubbed the B & B Grand Screen and will offer over 230 reclining seats and a screen that is over 70 feet wide.

The marketing study says there is "little risk of new competition."

There is a chance that Regal could remodel its existing 14-screen theater to include recliner seating. They are upgrading several theatres around the country but in most cases don't remodel the entire building to recliner seating and in return frustrate customers on their experience. If they upgrade, we still believe this will not affect ticket revenue for the new theatre.

The Marquee Bar and Grill would offer an expanded menu, including mozzarella sticks, gourmet burgers, chicken tenders, grilled chicken sandwiches, funnel cake fries and flatbread gourmet pizzas, according to the marketing study.

The luxury bar, the study says, "is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine, bottle of beer, or signature cocktail before or after the movie with friends, and drinks can be taken to any of our auditoriums to be enjoyed during the show."

If it's going to be state of the art I expect better than 7.1 surround sound. No thanks.

Mike Woolston AND Charlie Kuehn still profiting off the citizens of Joplin. Thank you both and the City of Joplin for all the tax abatements you get that takes away from our city and schools.

TBH, Hollywood is in huge trouble and theaters are dying. The only ones that will survive will be the mom & pop theaters like the one in Webb City. We already bailed out Hollywood & theaters after covid, yet they did little to nothing to instill any confidence in the future, while raising prices dramatically. It sounds great, but as an avid movie goer, I doubt Id go.

At least it will be clean for the first few months. If Northstar would close and scrub that place down, they could save a lot on "renovations". It's been a pigsty for years.

A TIF district is a big ask from a developer of a city. Asking for an additional $1.3 million from the city unacceptable. I would welcome a new state of the art theater but the city has no business funding private enterprise. This is a Wallace Bajalli type ask and should be rejected.
