Steve Gilbreth, Joplin High School principal for the past four years, has announced he will retire at the end of the current school year.
Gilbreth has been with the Joplin R-8 School District for 26 years, beginning as a teacher at North Middle School. He also served as principal at Memorial Middle School and South Middle School and as an assistant superintendent before becoming high school principal.

Summary
The principal is the instructional leader for his or her building and is responsible for the daily operation of the building.

Instructional Leadership
- Assume responsibility and instructional leadership for the planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the educational program.
- Develop and maintain a "learning community approach" with expectations for effective processes and procedures for leadership and learning for the organization.
- Work to build the leadership capacity of the assistant principals, teachers, and classified staff members.
- Provide for effective instructional strategies for teachers and support, including data analysis for student and school improvement efforts.
- Establish, monitor, and evaluate school improvement goals as documented in the annual Building School Improvement Plan (BSIP).
- Use data to make decisions about curriculum, assessment, instruction and all school improvement efforts.
- Communicate with students, teachers, parents and community members using a variety of mediums including technology.
- Liaison for programs with booster clubs and parent organizations.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of instruction and individual teacher performance.
- Coordinate and promote professional growth plans and opportunities for faculty and staff.
- Coordinate New Teacher Induction and ongoing staff development program.
- Establish a professional development plan for all building level administrators with on-going dialogue, reflection, and evaluation.
- Responsible for horizontal and vertical articulation and curricular alignment.
- Works with teachers and parents to implement student interventions that differentiate instruction based on student need.
- Review curriculum development proposals and oversees the development of the course of study.
- Interview and select teachers, assistant principals, and classified staff members.
- Evaluate teachers, counselors, assistant principals, athletic directors and classified staff members.
- Oversee the school's assessment program.
- Establish a culture of mutual respect and excellence through dialogue and relationships with staff, students, central office administrators, and community members.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate programs to enhance positive school culture and climate.
- Responsible for staffing, enrollment procedures, and the oversight of master schedule.
- Coordinate selection of all certified and classified staff.
- Provide effective oversight of special programs including the school's college, career and technology focused efforts (i.e. special education, student advisory program, student mentoring program, and career paths, and at-risk programs).
- Maintain the school's accreditation with the Missouri School Improvement program (MSIP) and Cognia.
- Work effectively with Franklin Technology Center administration to coordinate the instructional program.
Management of Operations
- Coordinate the development of the Master Schedule, Student and Staff Handbooks, and Staff Supervision Schedule.
- Develop and monitor overall school and departmental budgets and activity accounts.
- Ultimately responsible for building operations and maintenance and the overall safety and security of the school.
- Interpres Board of Education and central office policies and procedures.
- Maintain student and staff handbooks, including staff supervision and building procedures.
- Responsible for student records management, including attendance and discipline.
- Oversee the inventory, purchase, and organization of textbooks and supplies.
- Oversee vendor and service contracts.
- Oversee the coordination of the building level crisis plan.
- Supervise school activities and events.
- Provide support and coordination for the school's athletic programs.
- Coordinate and provide oversight of students activities (co-curricular) including graduation exercises
- Work effectively with Franklin Technology Center administration for the smooth operation of the entire campus.
Physical Demands
The individual who holds this position is regularly required to walk, hear and speak and must have close moderate and distance vision ability. Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
