Globe breaks Northpark Mall renovation story

About an hour ago, The Joplin Globe scored a major Joplin beat by breaking the news that CBL & Associates, owners of Northpark Mall, are planning a major renovation of the facility.
While the Daily offered extensive coverage of the Joplin City Council meeting and has been pounding the Globe on the city sports beat, so far the newcomer is still searching for the kind of scoops that will make it the center of watercooler conversation.
If nothing else, the Daily has managed to wake the sleeping giant and forced the Globe to become more up-to-date with its website.
The biggest advantage the Globe has, of course, is its much greater manpower. Unfortunaately for the Globe, that is also its biggest disadvantage. Anytime the Globe lands a big story, people can say, "Well, hey should be able to get the stories, they have so many more people." That difference in the size of the staffs means that the Globe is going to suffer some embarrassment each time it is scooped by the Daily.
What will be the most fascinating part of this new rivalry is what happens when a major, pull-out-all-the-stops story breaks in Joplin. It will be interesting to see what approaches the two newspapers take.

How can you say the Daily's beating the Globe sports coverage? It took them four or five days before they wrote anything about the Joplin High School varsity basketball teams. I stopped looking at that on Tuesday afternoon when they had stories on Thomas Jefferson and none on JOPLIN.

The Globe had a story on Mason Green being hurt in practice and not being able to play this week.

The Daily had a nice feature on the two wrestlers, the Globe had how they actually did in the first big tournament of the year.

Features are nice, but I want to know who's playing and how they did.

Looks like the Daily got the scoop on popular radio talk shows moving down the dial and that the new owners of 1310 AM are planning a morning news program.

I think it can only be called a "scoop" if its a topic that people actually care about. I mean really, I can get the "scoop" on what my neighbors are having for supper tonight...but is that really a scoop? See what I mean?

Looks like Michael Davison likes to post on the Turner report. It is obvious that first comment is from him. Sour grapes!

Score one for the Daily.com! MSSU coach rounds out staff on Web site before all other local media.

Randy how is the mall renovation a 'scoop'? Give me a break on that one. I took a dump today and haven't seen it it the Globe or the Daily. I wonder who will scoop that one.

Enough of the "Scoop" crap. If it is a "scoop" to be the first one to air a press release or press conference, who cares? Joplin does not offer a true radio news department that airs constantly, so, because the television stations wait until 5,6 or 10 to report or the Globe comes out each morning, does it matter?
The "Daily" may provide some spark to the "Globe" to improve it's product, but without a daily editorial, and today (Thursday) only publishing four new stories on their site, no comics, obituaries, police reports, or no business section, they have a long way to go to be a threat to the "Globe".
I'm anxious to see Sunday's edition, I suspect it will be a re-cap of all the already published stories for the week with nothing new.

Sunday's print edition will feature NEW stories every week. Sorry to disappoint.

Rick,
I am looking forward to the new Sunday edition. I hope your paper is both a financial and information success. I'm sure as things progress, story numbers and relevance will increase. Good luck.
