Documents filed in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Washington Friday indicate that the government considers the woman who was allegedly an accomplice of Rep. Nathan Cooper, R-Cape Girardeau, in an immigration fraud scheme to be extremely dangerous.
A 1 p.m. (our time) hearing Tuesday in Seattle will determine if Omega Penalosa Paulite will remain behind bars until her trial. In court documents. Assistant U. S. Attorney Thomas C. Albus describes Ms. Paulite as being "a serious risk to threaten or injure a prospective witness," "a serious risk to obstruct justice," and "a serious" flight risk.
The government received permission from a federal judge in Missouri Friday to keep much of its filings sealed, leaving us to wonder just how out of control this conspiracy has been.
Cooper, an immigration attorney, as well as a state representative pleaded guilty last week to the fraud charges and will be sentenced Oct. 19.
Ms. Paulite was charged with selling Cooper more than 100 visa approvals designated for the hospitality and temporary service industries, allowing workers to come to the U. S. illegally. Cooper gave the visas to trucking companies.
As of now, Cooper remains a member of the Missouri House of Representatives.
