Reports: Steelman to announce for governor Saturday

Numerous published reports are indicating State Treasurer Sarah Steelman will announce a run for the governor's mansion Saturday in Springfield:

Steelman’s announcement comes on the heels of Gov. Matt Blunt’s decision announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election to a second term. That same day but earlier than Blunt’s announcement, Steelman had said she would run again for state treasurer.

However, shortly after Blunt’s announcement, Steelman said she was reconsidering her decision in the light of “hundreds of telephone calls” that she said she was receiving that were encouraging her to run for governor.

The plan to declare her candidacy was disclosed Friday afternoon by Doug Gaston, deputy state treasurer.
