GateHouse Media closes two Massachusetts newspaper

GateHouse Media has announced it is closing two of its smaller newspapers in Massachusetts, according to an article posted on the Boston Herald website:

This week, GateHouse announced it was no longer publishing the Avon Messenger and Taunton Call, weekly publications that are small compared to the company’s other Massachusetts holdings.

The papers’ publisher, Mark Olivieri, said in a note to readers that the company plans to focus “our energies on our daily publications and through the most dynamic local Web sites possible.”

GateHouse spokesman Mark Maring did not respond to a request for comment.

Does that bode well for a GateHouse weekly like the Greenfield Vedette in Missouri?

I think Rick Rogers and a few others should start looking into putting together some local investors in case GateHouse starts selling off their local properties. Wouldn't it be nice to bring the Carthage Press, Neosho Daily News, ect back into local ownership. The Carthage Press should be a steal, with no presses currently. The Neosho Daily News may be able to be financed for a decent price too. Just an idea.
