Cardinal Caravan coming to Joplin January 18

Spring training is just around the corner and one sign of that is the annual Cardinal Caravan, which will make its Joplin visit 12 noon Saturday, January 19, at the Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.

Broadcaster and former Cardinal great Al "The Mad Hungarian" Hrabosky will serve as master of ceremonies. Current players scheduled to appear, according to the team website, are Shelby Miller, (pictured above) Seth Maness, and the organization's player of the year, Springfield Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras  (pictured below)(Cardinal fans are going to love to watch this guy play).

Also scheduled to be here are the Cardinals' new hitting coach John Mabry, and former pitchers Cal Eldred and Alan Benes.

The same group is scheduled to be in Springfield for two appearances Friday, January 18, the first at 12:15 p.m. at Hammons Field and the second at 6:15 at Hammons Arena.

As Harry Karey famously said in the summer of 1969 when St. Louis was desperately trying to catch Chicago in the standings, "The Cardinals are coming, tra-la-la-la, the Cardinals are coming, tra-la-la-la." Of course, in the end it was the Mets and not the Cubs or the Cards who prevailed in the standings, and New York went on to win the World Series that year. Hey, maybe the boys of summer will feel like working on some houses down there while they're in the general area. We can only hope so.
