KC Board member: Get on board or get out of the district!

In this video, a Kansas City teacher union representative tells the board of education that if it thinks throwing technology at the students will solve problems, they are clueless. This happened during a meeting in which the board approved purchasing a computer for every student at a cost of $7 million.

In response, a board member says it is going to happen and tells teachers and parents, "Get on board or get out of the district."

Ultimatums and threats. That's the Joplin Way to do professional development. It's worked so well. Pretty sure more than 100 teachers are gone now. It's a great way to get cheaper teachers.

Building consensus before making such a huge change should be a requirement. All stakeholders should have a say in what happens in a school district. Otherwise, disasters like what we see unfolding in Joplin occur. A school district that was accredited with distinction for six years running and is now losing accreditation can only be attributed to poor leadership from the top and lack of guidance from the governing body. The only question is how much longer the people of Joplin will contend with the situation. I would want more for my children.
