You’ve probably seen stories about how silly people in the Missouri legislature are trying to follow Kansas off a fiscal cliff with an “ill-conceived, fiscally irresponsible” tax plan. Governor Jay Nixon vetoed the GOP’s plan (HB253) a few weeks ago, but Speaker Tim Jones and his lackeys are promising to override the veto during the General Assembly’s annual Veto Session in September.
It’s hard to explain just how terrible the GOP’s tax plan will be for Missouri’s schools and communities if it becomes law. Governor Jay Nixon announced Friday that he’s holding back $400M in state spending to plan for a possible override of his veto of this plan -- and this is just a fraction of the devastating, job-killing cuts that will be coming if GOP extremists are successful in forcing their Kansas-style tax plan into law.
To raise the stakes in this standoff between the adults and children in the General Assembly, we’re going to have a little contest. Here’s how it will work:
- Any House member who votes to override the Governor’s veto of HB253 will be entered into a lottery.
- The 'winner' selected from this lottery will receive an aerial banner flown over a high school or college football in his or her home district, advertising the legislator’s short-sided votes against local schools.
- If the House does not take a vote to override the Governor’s veto during the September Veto Session, Progress Missouri will use funds raised for this project to thank Representatives who opposed HB253 from the beginning.
We need your help to let your legislator know about the stakes of overriding the Governor's veto of HB253. Send a quick note to your Representative here.
This is a new kind of project for us, and we don’t actually have “veto session aerial banner” in our budget. Can you help chip in $8 to offset the cost for the banner? It's important to take the fight for Missouri’s future to legislators’ districts, and pooling our resources can go a long way to making that happen.

instead of spending money on a "banner" donate to your local school district!
If IT IS REALLY ABOUT EDUCATION AND THE "KIDS" you would freely spend your dollars on the school district classrooms rather than a "banner" flying over the school!
