Carthage R-9 Board hires 12 teachers, accepts five resignations

The Carthage R-9 Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, April 15, 2019, 6 pm, at Carthage Intermediate Center. Present were Board members Tony Diggs, Lee Elliff Pound, Niki Cloud, Bill Lasley, and Jeff Jones. Elizabeth Streich and Justin Baucom were not present.

Boy Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students in sixth grade science classes of Heather Woodall, Ashley Patterson, Renea Mills, and Grace Powell presented prototype therapy toys they designed for children suffering from cerebral palsy. Amy Scott, substitute teacher, also assisted with the project.

Mr. Justin Baucom was recognized for his nine years of service as a member of the Carthage R-9 Board of Education.








The Board approved the Consent Agenda for the purpose of approving the meeting agenda, minutes of previous meeting, payment of bills, financial reports, contract for roofing project, change order for junior high remodel project, bid specifications for mowing/baling a field located between Steadley Elementary and Intermediate Center, bid specifications for copiers, and bid specifications for summer projects.

Artists of the Month awards were distributed to April winners.

The Board accepted the official results of the April 2, 2019, school board election.

Niki Cloud and Wayne Jones were sworn in to serve three-year terms.

Mrs. Elliff Pound provided an update on Carthage R-9 School Foundation activities. The Helen S. Boylan Art and Writing Contests winners have been selected. A showcase will be held on Wednesday, April 24th, in the high school commons. The event is open to the public. The Flanigan Speech Contest will take place in the high school Thursday, April 18, during the school day. This event is not open to the public. Carthage R-9 Foundation scholarships winners will be announced May 6th during the Academic Awards Night in the high school gym. The Foundation has established a grant committee to streamline the grant application and approval process. Sales of Tiger Activity Center bricks will begin soon. Teams and corporate sponsors are being sought for the Tiger Pride Run to be held this fall.

Gregg Wolf, Assistant Superintendent for Business, reviewed the annual Missouri Highway Patrol bus inspection report. The district received a 94.27% rating and, for the 17th consecutive year, will receive the Fleet Excellence Award and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Exemplary School Bus Maintenance Award.








Cathy Eck, IT Director, provided an evaluative report on Technology, Missouri School Improvement Program Area I-11. The Comprehensive School Improvement Plan for 2015-2020 is heavily focused on data-driven decision-making and increased stakeholder communication and involvement. Our student information system, Infinite Campus, continually provides data analysis.

Findings indicate a steady increase of student and parent logins. An expansion of Wi-Fi is ongoing. 

Brant Maxwell, A+ Coordinator provided an evaluative report on A+, Missouri School Improvement Program Area I-6 (3). In 2017-18, 113 out of 152 students qualified for A+ tuition reimbursement. Accomplishments noted from the previous year include the increase of students tutoring in the Dual Language program, matching tutors to situations specific to their strengths, and an increase in attendance, GPA accountability, and the number of A+ qualified students.

Dr. Baker updated the Board regarding the following announcements:

 Recognized the 2018 Practical Nursing Program for achieving a 100% NCLEX pass rate.

 All five junior high choirs earned excellent ratings at Pitt State last week.

 The junior high will host a night of poetry and jazz on Monday, April 29, at 7:00 pm in the junior high cafeteria with free admission.

 Appreciation for the support of Marty Lown and Bill Putnam, members of the Steadley Trust, for the $500,000 donation to help construct the high school tennis complex.

 The fifth and final Carthage 2020 and Beyond meeting will be held on April 22, 2019, in the high school commons area at 6:30 pm. Many questions and comments received during all meetings will be addressed.

The Board met in closed session immediately following the regular meeting to discuss legal and personnel matters in compliance with Section 610.021 (1) (3) and (6) of the Revised Statutes of Missouri.

In closed session, the Board accepted resignations/retirements, and approved the employment of certified and support staff as follows:
