At the beginning of today's COVID-19 briefing, Joplin Mayor Gary Shaw told Joplin residents to observe Easter Sunday in their own homes.
"It is not safe to attend church or temple this weekend," Shaw said.
He provided some alternatives to attending services or gathering with family Sunday, including televised and online services, video chats with family and cooking traditional meals.
"The virus is still spreading in our community. This is a very, very important time for us to stay at home and stop the spread of this disease in our community."
Shaw said most Joplin residents have complied with the stay-at-home order, "but there are some who are not taking it seriously.
"It's important that we practice the standards we've been given to keep this thing from spreading."
Shaw asked families to limit their celebration to those who live with them.
"I know it's hard to be separated from family members, especially on a holiday.
"Staying apart is the best thing we can do for our loved ones right now."
Shaw addressed those who have been complaining about the decisions city officials have made during the COVID-19 crisis.
"Maybe it's time for you to stop complaining."
The mayor ended his portion of the briefing by leading a prayer.
City Health Department Director Dan Pekarek reviewed proper steps Joplin residents can take to prevent the spread of the virus and advised going out only as necessary, adding, "Don't take more individuals than you need to the grocery store."
Pekarek said Health Department officials are continuing to investigate the city's third case of COVID-19, which was confirmed Thursday.
The briefing included reports from Joplin Police Chief Sloan Rowland and Joplin R-8 Superintendent Melinda Moss, which will be featured in separate posts.
