My defense of the mainstream media and a question- Why aren't more people pro-life?

I had seen the comment before on some of my Facebook posts about COVID-19, but after just coming across it again I finally am compelled to respond.

It came on my Inside Joplin Facebook status update of the Turner Report's posting of the Jasper County Health Department's announcement that seven people have tested positive for COVID-19.

It was a smug comment from someone who thankfully is not a Facebook friend of mine, but who proudly apologizes to "anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient. I will get you to shortly."

That should give you an idea of the kind of helpful contributions this man can make to any observation.

As usual, he was working overtime to offend.

Oh, don't tell the recovery numbers. Let's keep that a secret. Shhh. But at last count it was three of the seven, so now how many now have it? Shhh. 4.

Nothing is more irritating than a sanctimonious know-it-all who takes one piece of information and twists it completely out of shape just to prove his intellectual superiority.

He is not the only one who has made this comment, though many of those have done so in a more sincere manner.

Four is not the number who have recovered. Four is the number who have not been hospitalized. I have yet to hear the Health Department, the hospitals or our local officials make claims about anyone who has made a complete recovery.

These are the people whose condition has not reached a point where they had to be hospitalized. Hopefully, they will never reach that point and will make a full and speedy recovery.

And of course, the media is emphasizing the number of people who have died or who have been hospitalized.

Not only are we talking about death, but we are talking about a strain on our hospitals and emergency systems, doctors, nurses and first responders who are risking their lives because that's the kind of dedicated, courageous people they are.

We are talking about the immediate trickle-down effect that may not be apparent yet, but will be in a few months when we may see complications or deaths occur because of people who were not able to receive routine treatment for other types of illness because of the necessity of dealing with this pandemic.

The media is providing this information, but of course, there are none who are so blind as those who will not see.

There are none who are so contemptible as those who put their personal comfort and convenience ahead of the lives of others.

The reporters from what this man and many others consider to be the mainstream media have done an incredible job of covering this story from every angle. Sure, there have been misses, but on the times they miss the mark they correct the story.

Contrary to what some believe, it is not only the mark of a good reporter, but also of a decent human being to admit when you are wrong.

The "mainstream media" does that. Its critics seldom do, especially those who criticize from the most powerful platforms.

As for the media not telling the story of those who have recovered, which has not been the case, consider this.

If we are following the logic this commenter and others express, then the media emphasized the wrong point in its coverage of the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012, in which a deranged killer murdered 26 people, including 20 children.

"Twenty-six people died, but there were a lot more people who did not get shot. Why aren't we talking about all of them. Why does the media keep on concentrating on the bad news?"

I can easily see him saying that.

It makes just about as much sense.

Unfortunately, you might carry that analogy even further.

I can easily envision my Facebook commenter complaining that people are wanting to keep him from doing whatever he wants to do and take away his freedoms just so a few more people will live.

It's a sad, sad thing that I see from so many in our society. Will someone answer one question for me?

Why aren't these people pro-life?

I'm willing to guess that they are "Pro-Life" when it comes to reproductive rights.

Mr. Turner, my conveniences are NOT more important than the lives of others. That being said, I feel that my Rights ARE! The sheer amount of people that welcome this authoritative control is appalling!

@10:24- could be one of those persons who highly values being able to rely on others to properly vaccinate their family so they can not properly vaccinate theirs. AKA an anti vaxxer.

Also what are the odds that 10:24 PM voted for Trump and his Republican enablers yet now whines about authoritarianism?
