The Springfield-Greene County Health Department is urging local residents to avoid leisure travel, especially to areas where COVID-19 is widespread.
In total, 30% of Greene County COVID-19 cases have been travelers. Adding contacts of travelers to that statistic, 81% of all Greene County COVID-19 cases were a result of travel.
Our department has been especially alarmed to see that 18 of our recent cases traveled after March 16. For context, March 16 is the day the City of Springfield and Greene County leaders issued an order limiting group gatherings to 50 or fewer people and declared a civil emergency.
“This is not the time for leisure travel, or travel of any kind,” said Director of Health Clay Goddard. “We are asking that you wait to go see your family that does not live here. We ask that you take this seriously and do not risk bringing any more of this disease back to our community. This is not only a personal responsibility, but it is your responsibility to protect this community that we all share.”
We also recognize that this weekend is of special significance for several religious groups—however, we continue to advise against large family gatherings. In-person religious services while the Stay at Home orders are in effect are not permitted.
