Carthage Police: We have no credible threat of upcoming violent protests

(From the Carthage Police Department)

The Carthage Police Department has received numerous calls asking about potentially violent protests in our area.

At this time, we do not have any credible threat of this type of activity occurring in our area. We have been in contact with other area Police Departments who have advised that they have not received any credible threats.

We are all aware that information has been circulating on social media regarding potentially violent protests throughout the entire United States.

We will continue to monitor the situation along with the other area agencies and we are ready to respond appropriately if we receive information specific to our area.

We are also being asked about the legal right for a person to protect themselves or their property. I would refer you to the Missouri State Statute 563.031 which is the law regarding the use of force in defense of persons or property. https://revisor.mo.gov/main/OneSection.aspx?section=563.031

It is up to each individual person to take this information and act upon it if they wish.

For example, some businesses in the area have boarded their windows for protection of their storefronts as a precaution, and others have not. It is totally the decision of the business owner. Again, we have no credible information to date that there will be violent protests in our area.

As always, if you have information regarding criminal activity in Carthage Missouri please call 417-237-7200 for non-emergencies or 911 for an emergency.
