Bond reduction hearing scheduled for Joplin gymnastics coach charged with molesting underage boy

An 8:15 a.m. Wednesday bond reduction hearing has been scheduled in Jasper County Circuit Court for Joplin gymnastics coach Kip Andrew Johnson,  45, who faces two counts of statutory sodomy and one count of furnishing pornographic material to a minor.

Johnson waived arraignment this morning during a video hearing before Judge Jerry Holcomb and entered a not guilty plea.

Johnson is being held in the Jasper County Jail without bond.

In a bond reduction motion filed Thursday, Johnson's attorney, Brian Glades, says that if Johnson receives bail he will wear an ankle monitor and remain under house arrest except for court hearings or meetings with his attorneys.

Johnson, who is part owner of Amplified Gymnastics, will not be working there for the time being, according to the motion.

The other job Johnson held at the time of his arrest will not be a problem either.

The Newton County Prosecuting Attorney 's office filed two statutory sodomy charges against Johnson for crimes that allegedly took place January 27 in a first floor examination room at Freeman Rehabilitation and Sports Center.

"The defendant is not currently employed at Freeman Hospital."

In the motion, Glades also promises Johnson "will not be in the near vicinity of any children less than 18 years of age."

Judge Joseph Hensley will preside over the bond hearing.

The Jasper County charges against Johnson involve sex acts that allegedly took place at Johnson's home, but the Joplin Police Department investigation indicated he had been sexually assaulting the boy over a two-year- period, according to the probable cause statement.
