Threat to shoot his dog leads to Joplin man's arrest on weapons charge

 A Joplin man who is on probation for assault has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, a felony, following an incident in which he threatened to shoot his dog for defecating in the house.

According to the probable cause statement, Jason Wayne Lovegrove (DOB 1986) became so upset with what his dog had done that he "retried a pump-action .22 caliber rifle from his bedroom in an attempt to shoot the dog.

A witness called the Joplin Police Department, with Lovegrove overhearing the call and making threats, the witness told investigating officers.

Lovegrove paced around the house making statements such as "I'll wait for them to show up so I can take {the rifle} outside and have them shoot me."

The probable cause statements notes that Lovegrove has a lengthy criminal history, including being convicted in Benton County, Arkansas for "breaking and entering, battery and narcotics violations."

Lovegrove is scheduled to be arraigned 8:15 a.m. Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court. His bond has been set at $10,000- $7,500 surety and $2,500 cash.
