Assault charges filed against Joplin man who allegedly beat, choked, hit woman with cell phone

The Newton County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed first degree assault charges today against James Michael Berry, (DOB 1979) Joplin, who was arrested Thursday by Joplin Police Department SWAT after allegedly beating and choking a woman.

Joplin Police officers responded to a call of an ongoing assault.

From the probable cause statement:

Officers responded to the house. James and victim were both there but refused to come outside of the house.

After SWAT responded, contact was able to be made with victim and James was taken into custody for warrants.

Victim was covered in bruises, had a busted lip and a laceration on her head that were both covered in dry blood. She also had bruises on her chest and thighs. There were bruises on her throat and what appeared to be finger marks.

Victim stated that {she} and James had an argument over money on 10/24/2023 and he choked her. She advised that she could not breathe and thought that he was going to kill her. She disclosed that he also threw a cell phone at her head, causing the laceration mentioned above.

Judge Anna Christine Rhoades issued a warrant for Berry's arrest. He is to be held without bond.
