A few weeks ago, I talked with a representative from Raw, an award-winning London-based production company, about a documentary the company was hoping to produce about the May 22, 2011 Joplin Tornado.
As part of the research, she had read both the original version of 5:41: Stories from the Joplin Tornado that John Hacker and I wrote (along with 27 survivors who shared their stories) in 2011 and the expanded 10th anniversary edition, which included material from the original book, our follow-up Spirit of Hope and new material.
The next step, the representative told me, was to put together a pitch and find financial backing for the project.
It appears that step was successful.
A producer from Raw toured Joplin with Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce officials recently and is looking for help from anyone who has photos and videos of the tornado.
In their own words:
Hello, We are writing from the award-winning British production company, Raw based in London (www.raw.co.uk). We are making a documentary that explores the impact of the tornado that struck Joplin on May 22nd, 2011.We will be looking at events both before and after that day, all told sensitively through the experiences of the people who call it home. We are on the lookout for archive video and images around the tornado.
