Preliminary hearing set for Joplin woman on possession of heroin, stealing charges

The preliminary hearing for a Joplin woman alleged to have been caught stealing and in possession of heroin at the Carthage Walmart August 8 is set for Tuesday in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Amanda Kay Carel (DOB 1991) was with her young child when she allegedly stole merchandise, according to the probable cause statement.

Carel was using scan and pay on her phone with nothing in her cart on her phone showing she had not scanned any items. Carel consented to a search of her purse where I located 2 burnt pieces of foil common with heroin use.

Carel dropped a baggie on the floor from her underwear containing what I believed to be heroin (.4 grams weighed in baggie) from my training and experience.

Carel’s related charges: Possess Controlled Substance 07/1/2017, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 07/01/2017, Possess Controlled Substance 05/26/2020. Carel is already on probation for Possess Controlled Substance.

The case was investigated by the Carthage Police Department.
