The Joplin Globe came out strongly against Amendment 5 in an editorial in today's edition.
According to the editorial writer, the amendment, which would replace Missouri's income tax with increased sales taxes and fees, is a gift to lobbyists and puts too much power in the hands of our representatives at our expense.

So, Amendment 5 will give more power to lawmakers — perhaps the biggest strike against it — which in turn gives more money to their lobbyist partners roaming the halls in Jefferson City.Amendment 5 looks worse and worse every time we look at it. The pile keeps growing.
Vote to shut this down on Aug. 4.
Gov. Mike Kehoe has already said some sectors of the economy will be exempt, including agriculture, health care or real estate. Whether you agree with those exemptions or not, every exemption only means a higher sales tax imposed on the remaining sectors of the economy.

People like to complain that California and New York have high tax rates, if this amendment passes in Missouri, we will have just as high or even higher taxes than those two states. I don’t believe the governor, when he says they will exempt certain taxes. They may wait a short time, but then they will tax us on those items too. When left to these republican legislators, they will raise tax after tax to pay for their pet projects and we will be at their mercy. Especially if amendment 4 is also passed. We will have no or little ability to stop them, except to vote them out, but that won’t come soon enough for the lower or middle class citizens.
I couldn’t care less what the Joplin Globe has to say about anything, just a typical liberal newspaper
