The results of the investigation were revealed in a letter to Mayor Clay Sexson from Mary Johnson, chief of investigations for the state auditor's office.
"Our review determined there was no indication of fraud within the City of Goodman. The identified difference that led to the allegation of missing funds appears to be an accounting error due to the transition of utility systems.
"Our understanding is the Missouri Rural Water Association also reviewed and resolved the accounting issues and did not identify any missing funds. As a result, we will close the investigation."
The investigation's results were exactly what the mayor said, shortly after former Police Chief Mike Akins asked both the state auditor's office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol to investigate $200,000 in missing funds.
A few days after the McDonald County Press ran an article on Akins' allegations, Mayor Sexson said every penny of the "missing money" had been found and he welcomed the state auditor's investigation.
Akins resigned in late January, citing lack of support from city officials.
